Reality Bites

OK, I will admit I am a card-carrying member of RTWA (Reality Television Watchers Anonymous). The emphasis is on the "anonymous,” because a lot of us will not admit we actuality watch reality TV. Some of us would rather say, "I watched 24 last night,” when we actually watched Dancing with the Stars. What is it about reality TV that draws us in? We all know (well, I think most of us know), there's not much "realness" to about 95% of the shows. How do I know that? I actually auditioned for one about eight years ago and due to the agreement I signed I will keep the show a secret. However, I can tell you I didn't make the show, because I was a little too real. For the record, yes, I only auditioned for the "exposure.” I am so thankful I didn't make the final cut. The questions I was asked were ridiculous. One of those questions was "Would you be willing to simulate sex on television?" (Hold on fellas, before you respond to your computer, the simulation only meant vocal sounds. LOL) I literally laughed out loud and said to the producers that they couldn't be serious. Well, long story short, I never made it to the show. I did get a free trip to Cali, stayed at a resort and received a daily cash stipend, not so bad.

Every time I turn on the TV and flip through the channels, there is a new reality show on. I was flipping through the channels yesterday and I saw one about how to get your pet to love you. What's next? Who Wants be a Millionaire Deal Maker While Singing in the Shower? These shows are a way for people to be entertained by people they would never let into their homes. Again, I will admit I get sucked into quite a few, but a lot of it is pure curiosity. I can't believe some of the things people will actually do to get on TV. At the same time, I can't be mad at them because some of them do actually turn their 15 minutes into a career. I would like to see some more shows of substance and quality. I think it's needed, especially with this upcoming generation. I wish there was a way to balance it out. My niece is 7 years old and already on her way to becoming a "Bridezilla.” Are you a reality TV junkie? Let it all out in the comments below. You can remain "anonymous" LOL!
