Why I’m Not Married…Too?

No, it’s not a play on the title of Tyler Perry’s latest movie; it’s a follow up to a previous blog I wrote a little over two years ago. And guess what? I’m still not married…and I have no qualms about it. This is the time of the year when I start getting invited to bridal showers or fulfilling my obligation as a bridesmaid…once again. Of course during these lovely events everyone wants to ask that famous question, “So, you’re next, right?” It’s almost like going to a funeral, and as you grieve for the dearly departed you ask the elderly man to your right, “So, you’re next, right?”

Don’t get me wrong I am all for marriage. If the two people truly love each other, I say go for it. From current events and TV shows, marriage doesn’t look quite like “Ozzie & Harriet” (google it…I know you have no idea who they are…lol). At the same time, no one should be afraid of marriage because of someone’s, shall we say, “indiscretions”. Just about 95% of the people my age (and no, I’m not telling you) are married, have been married or skipped that all together and just had families. I am none of the above. Does it mean I’m missing something? Maybe. I have never regretted falling in love with anyone. I have lived and learned from everyone I know and loved. I would not change a thing. If a person is content with where they are now, why force them into a lifetime commitment? When someone’s heart isn’t in it, it can only lead to the heartbreak for the other person. Where we have strong emotions, we’re liable to fool ourselves.

As I approach the “baby clock ticking” stage, marriage and children do cross my mind. In the meantime, if I want to hear the pitter patter of little feet, I’ll get a dog and put shoes on him. To my single people who go through the agony of an “all eyes on me” feeling when attending a wedding, baby shower, etc., don’t fret. Be happy with who and where you are. If it’s meant to be it will happen. Please for your own sake, don’t follow the rule from your favorite reality dating shows where it’s okay to date 20 people at the same time. You might as well spend your time trying to find a needle in a haystack. Take your time, enjoy the moment, meet people and most of all…

Live your life…
